Kevin O'Leary said the threat of Donald Trump losing his New York assets is spooking investors. Speaking on Fox News on Friday, O'Leary said Trump should've been given more time to scrape up his $454 million bond. O'Leary said the idea that Trump's assets can be seized on such short notice has undermined the "American brand." AdvertisementEarlier this month, the former president successfully paid a $92 million bond as part of E. Jean Carroll's defamation case against him. Representatives for O'Leary, James' office, and Trump's campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment sent outside regular hours by Business Insider.

CNN —Contrary to the popular view that former President Donald Trump has successfully delayed accountability, this week he’s facing a one-two punch that has the potential to inflict lasting damage. Some say that this case, too, serves as an example of Trump’s success at delaying prosecution against him. On March 18, Trump’s lawyers told the court that it was a “practical impossibility” to secure such a large bond. The bottom line, however, is that the New York attorney general is likely going to continue putting liens on Trump’s properties. Whatever delays may be present in those jurisdictions, or in Florida’s Mar-a-Lago documents case, in New York the former president is facing serious hits.

But exemplifying the roller-coaster nature of his public career, Trump is also soon poised for a massive financial windfall. The case, related to payment to an adult film star ahead of the 2016 election, could lead to Trump being a convicted felon by November’s election. His legal team said last week the bond amount was a “practical impossibility” for Trump, whose wealth is tied up in skyscrapers and golf resorts. Trump’s legal team has also said he shouldn’t be required to sell assets to meet the deadline since doing so would create a fire sale devastating to his business. The White House has done its best not to comment on the case, to avoid giving Trump more political ammunition.

Here’s what happens if Trump can’t secure the bond:Seizing bank accounts and cashIn theory, officials can begin the complicated legal process of taking his assets, barring any other strategic legal maneuvering from state prosecutors and countering from Trump’s legal team. “They walk in and give it to the manager,” said Adam Pollock, a former assistant New York State Attorney General who now specializes in judgment enforcement at Pollock Cohen LLP. “The attorney general’s office is the largest firm in New York State, if you think about it as a law firm. "They're trying to deprive him of his cash, they want to bankrupt him, they want to hurt him so badly," Eric Trump told Fox News in an interview. Trump's son Eric, a co-defendant in the fraud case, accused Attorney General Letitia James on Sunday of trying to bankrupt his father with the judgment. Eric's complaint came days after news that James's office had registered the massive fraud judgment with the Westchester County, New York, county clerk's office. Yet even if the higher-end estimate is accurate, as Trump’s lawyers have made clear in sober, detailed filings, it wouldn’t be enough. And at least some of the money Trump does have is tied up in loan agreements that include terms requiring him to have tens of millions of dollars in cash on hand. One insurer, Chubb, underwrote a $91.63 million bond just two weeks ago in another Trump legal loss – E. Jean Carroll’s defamation case. In the past week, the insurer informed Trump’s team it could not accept property as collateral. In total, 30 insurers contacted by Trump’s team declined to pursue the effort to secure a bond.

Minneapolis CNN —The New York civil fraud trial of former President Donald Trump carries extremely high stakes for the self-proclaimed business mogul. “It’s between severe and seismic” as to the effects on Trump’s businesses, Thomas told CNN on Monday. Early last month, an appeals court judge paused the dissolution process for the duration of the ongoing $250 million fraud trial. A New York judge fined Donald Trump's family business the maximum penalty of $1.6 million for committing tax fraud. “[Trump] has largely been absent from the New York market for a long time,” he said.

Trump's testimony wrapped up in midafternoon. Over roughly four hours on the witness stand, Trump often avoided direct answers, instead bragging about his properties and his wealth. New York state lawyers said in their lawsuit that the estimates misled lenders and insurers, earning him more than $100 million and exaggerating his wealth by $2 billion. At one point when Trump was on the stand, Engoron asked Kise to take Trump to the back of the courtroom and "explain the rules."

The back-to-back appearances Thursday from Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump – who both helped run the Trump Organization while their father was in the White House – comes ahead of the former president’s own testimony on Monday. Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump are co-defendants in the case, along with their father, the Trump Org., and several company executives.
